Canggu is a stretch of coastline and rice-field hinterland on Bali's southwest coast, in Kuta Utara (North Kuta) district, Badung Regency, about 10 km northwest of Kuta and 12 km northwest of Denpasar. The historic desa of Canggu itself is small — 5,375 residents per 2016 census data — but the name now covers a roughly 8-kilometer run of coast and rice paddy from Berawa in the south to Cemagi near Tanah Lot in the north, an area whose day-to-day population of workers, expats, and hospitality staff is understood to be far larger than that official figure, though it isn't separately tallied. Tourism here traces to a 1990 international surfing contest; since roughly 2020, Canggu has urbanized faster than anywhere else on the island, now home to several hundred registered hotels and guesthouses. It's Bali's digital-nomad and surf-culture hub today: black-sand beaches (Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, Berawa) with breaks from beginner to advanced, a dense laptop-friendly café scene, beach clubs, working rice paddies, and centuries-old sea temples — alongside real growing pains, especially traffic congestion on roads never built for this much traffic.
