Brno is the Czech Republic's second city, and its café scene sits in Prague's shadow the way most second cities' do — smaller, less written-about internationally, but genuinely good. We researched eight specialty and third-wave cafés, cross-checking each one's own website, social channels, or business-directory listing against independent café guides. One correction up front: two entries in our original list — "Café Mitte" and "Spital Cafe Mitte - Bohunice" — are not the same venue counted twice. They're separate cafés (one in the Old Town, one near the university hospital in Bohunice) run under the same "Mitte Coffee" brand, which opened its second site in January 2018. We've renamed both below to make that clear.

Brno vs. Prague, and the local roaster scene

Recent specialty-coffee guides (European Coffee Trip's Czech Republic directory, and independent guides like Mondomulia's 2023 Brno roundup) describe Brno as smaller and more affordable than Prague's scene, but tightly knit — a handful of cafés (Monogram, Coffee Trail) keep showing up across multiple "best of" lists. Brno also has its own local roasters rather than just importing beans: Rebelbean roasts in-house at its Vlněna flagship, and Jokes Aside Coffee Roasters supplies STAV SE, voted the Czech Republic's best café in the European Coffee Trip Awards 2025 (announced late October 2025, based on over 22,000 user votes).

Practical Tips

• Peak coffee times run 8-10am on weekday mornings

• Not every specialty bar is laptop-friendly — STAV SE leans no-laptops, so check ahead if you need a workspace

• Card is accepted everywhere on this list, but keep some koruna cash as backup for smaller purchases

• Friday/weekend hours often run shorter than weekdays (Coffee Trail closes 4pm Fridays, 3pm weekends) — don't assume standard hours hold all week

• Mitte Panská and Mitte Spitálka are a 20+ minute tram ride apart — plan for one or the other, not both in one crawl

Is Brno a good coffee city compared to Prague?
