Introduction

Where to base an Okinawa trip depends on whether the priority is city life, resort beaches, or something between the two — the main island is long and thin enough that these are genuinely different bases, not just different neighborhoods. Naha, Chatan, and the Onna/Nago resort coast each serve a different trip.

Naha: Convenience Over Beachfront

Naha is the practical choice for anyone prioritizing the airport, Kokusai-dori, Shuri Castle, and public transport over sand. The Yui Rail runs directly through the city, and hotels cluster around Kumoji, Makishi, and the monorail line. Hyatt Regency Naha, Okinawa, in the Makishi district, is a well-reviewed upscale option within walking distance of Kokusai-dori and the monorail. Naha does have a beach — Naminoue, right below Naminoue Shrine — but it's small and urban; treat Naha as a city stay with easy day-trip access to the rest of the island, not a beach base.

Chatan and Mihama American Village: The Middle Ground

About 15 km north of Naha, Chatan and its Mihama American Village district split the difference between city and resort. The district sits directly on the coast with beach access, built on the site of the former US Hamby Airfield after its 1981 return to civilian use. Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort sits inside this district with direct beach access, making it a reasonable base for travelers who want resort comforts within a short taxi ride of both the airport (roughly 30–40 minutes) and central Naha, without committing to the more remote resort coast further north.

The Resort Coast: Onna Village and Nago

The classic Okinawa resort experience — dedicated beachfront properties, ocean-view rooms, higher price points — concentrates along Onna Village and further north into Nago, roughly 45–75 minutes from the airport depending on the property. Halekulani Okinawa, the Hawaiian brand's only property outside Honolulu, opened in Onna in 2019 on Kariyushi Beach. The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa sits inland on a hilltop above Nago overlooking a golf course rather than directly on the beach — worth knowing if oceanfront access is the priority. This coast is also the practical base for reaching Churaumi Aquarium and Cape Maeda's Blue Cave without a long daily drive.
