Sonoma's lodging spans historic plaza-adjacent hotels to a wine-country resort spa. We checked eight properties below — one well-known chain hotel turned out to have rebranded in place, and two others turned out to sit just outside the town's actual boundaries.

El Dorado Hotel

A boutique hotel in a building dating to 1843, directly on Sonoma Plaza, with plaza and vineyard-view balconies.

Sonoma Hotel

A 19th-century, 16-room historic boutique hotel on the plaza, home to the well-known restaurant the girl & the fig.

Ledson Hotel

A six-room luxury boutique hotel on the plaza built by a longtime local winemaking family — worth noting it's a distinct property from the separate Ledson Winery, located several miles away in Kenwood.

MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa

A wine-country resort on a former family estate a few blocks from the plaza, with a full-service spa.

The Lodge at Sonoma Resort, Autograph Collection

A 182-room wine-country resort about a mile from the plaza, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection.

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa

A historic 1927 resort built around natural hot springs. Worth a location flag: it's actually in Boyes Hot Springs, an unincorporated community just north of Sonoma, sharing the same mailing address and zip code but administratively a separate place.

Sonoma Valley Inn, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

A standard chain hotel a block from the plaza. Worth a rebrand flag: it operated for years as a Best Western before converting in place to Hilton's Tapestry Collection — the same business, same address, new brand.

Sonoma Creek Inn

A genuine budget option with updated motel-style rooms. Worth the same location flag as the Fairmont: it's technically in Boyes Hot Springs, not Sonoma proper.

Properties We Excluded

The Vineyard Inn has closed, though it still appears bookable on several aggregator sites — a stale listing worth avoiding. The historic Union Hotel building on the plaza has operated as a bank branch for decades and is no longer a hotel. The Blue Wing Inn, one of the oldest hotel buildings in Northern California, is now a museum space within Sonoma State Historic Park, not a place to stay.

Practical Tips

• Double-check any source calling Sonoma Valley Inn a "Best Western" — it rebranded to Hilton's Tapestry Collection.

• Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Sonoma Creek Inn are both technically outside Sonoma's town limits, in Boyes Hot Springs — a short drive rather than a walk from the plaza.

• El Dorado Hotel and Sonoma Hotel are the two strongest picks for a genuine plaza-adjacent stay.

The Sonoma Valley Inn's Best Western-to-Tapestry Collection rebrand, the Boyes Hot Springs location of the Fairmont and Sonoma Creek Inn, and the Vineyard Inn's closure were each independently confirmed before being noted or excluded.
